The GPA Formula
Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours
Example: An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12.0 quality points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course = 13.2 quality points. Total: 25.2 ÷ 7 credits = 3.60 GPA.
Weighted GPA for High School
Many high schools use a weighted 5.0 scale to reward students taking harder courses:
- AP / IB Courses: +1.0 boost (A = 5.0)
- Honors Courses: +0.5 boost (A = 4.5)
- Regular Courses: Standard 4.0 scale
Toggle the Use Weighted Scale checkbox above to enable AP/Honors weighting.
What Is a Good GPA?
- 3.5–4.0: Dean's List / Summa / Magna Cum Laude range
- 3.0–3.49: Above average — competitive for most graduate programs
- 2.5–2.99: Average — meets minimum requirements at most schools
- 2.0–2.49: Below average — may trigger academic probation
- Below 2.0: At risk of academic suspension at most institutions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each course's grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0) by its credit hours to get quality points. Add all quality points together, then divide by total credit hours.
Example: A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12 QP + B (3.0) × 4 credits = 12 QP. Total: 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale where an A is always 4.0 regardless of course difficulty.
Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes: AP courses get +1.0 (max 5.0) and Honors courses get +0.5 (max 4.5). An A in AP Biology = 5.0 weighted but 4.0 unweighted.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Cumulative GPA combines all semesters. Multiply your prior cumulative GPA by prior total credits, add current semester quality points, then divide by total credits.
Do plus and minus grades affect GPA?
Yes. On the standard +/− scale, an A− is 3.7 (not 4.0), a B+ is 3.3, and a B− is 2.7. The difference between a B+ and B− is 0.6 GPA points, which can significantly impact your cumulative GPA over multiple semesters.
