The Math Behind the Final Grade Formula
When final exam season arrives, calculating your target score removes uncertainty and helps you prioritize study hours where they matter most.
Score Needed = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Weight))] ÷ Weight
Worked Example:
Suppose you currently have an 82% (B-) in Chemistry, your goal is to finish with an 85% (B), and your comprehensive final exam is worth 30% of your grade:
- Coursework completed: 100% - 30% = 70% (or 0.70)
- Points banked from prior work: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 points
- Points still needed to hit 85%: 85 - 57.4 = 27.6 points
- Score required on final: 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92.0%
