How CGPA to Percentage Conversion Works

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is used by many Indian universities and boards on a 10-point scale. Converting CGPA to percentage is essential for job applications, university admissions abroad, and comparing academic records across different grading systems.

📖

CBSE Formula

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This is the official formula from CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). A CGPA of 10 equals 95%, not 100%. This is the most widely used conversion in India.

🏫

VTU Formula

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses a different formula. A CGPA of 8.0 = (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%.

🇺🇸

US 4.0 GPA

Approximate % = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. This gives a rough estimate. A 3.5 GPA ≈ 87.5%. For precise conversion, use the letter grade → percentage mapping.

🌍

Why Convert?

International students applying to US/UK universities, students applying for jobs that require percentage marks, and scholarship applications all commonly need CGPA-to-percentage conversion.

CGPA to Percentage FAQ

The most common formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This is the standard CBSE formula used in India. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 = 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. Different universities may use different multipliers — VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, Mumbai University uses CGPA × 8.8, etc.
VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. So a CGPA of 8.0 at VTU = (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%. This differs from the CBSE formula of CGPA × 9.5.
A common approximation is: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. So a 3.5 GPA ≈ 87.5%. However, this is a rough estimate. The exact conversion depends on the school's specific grade scale. For a more accurate conversion, use the letter grade → percentage mapping (e.g., A = 93–96%, B+ = 87–89%, etc.).
They measure the same thing (cumulative academic performance) but use different scales. GPA is typically on a 4.0 scale (used in the US), while CGPA is often on a 10-point scale (used in India). Both average grade points weighted by credit hours, but the number range and letter-grade mapping differ.
CBSE uses 9.5 because a perfect 10 CGPA doesn't correspond to 100% marks — it represents a score range (typically 91–100%). The 9.5 multiplier provides a conservative estimate that approximates the average percentage within each CGPA point. This was officially adopted by CBSE in 2010 when they moved to the grading system.
