Semester Grade Formula

Semester = (Q1 × W1 + Q2 × W2 + Exam × W3) ÷ (W1 + W2 + W3)

Example (40/40/20):

Q1 = 88%, Q2 = 92%, Exam = 85%

(88×40 + 92×40 + 85×20) ÷ 100 = 88.6% → B+

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my semester grade?

Multiply each quarter grade by its weight, add the products, then divide by total weight. The most common split is 40% Q1 + 40% Q2 + 20% Final Exam. Example: (88×40 + 92×40 + 85×20) ÷ 100 = 88.6%.

What is the most common semester grade weighting?

The most common is 40/40/20 (40% each quarter, 20% final exam). Other common splits include 45/45/10, 37.5/37.5/25, and 50/50 (no exam).

Can I calculate without a final exam?

Yes. Leave the exam score blank and the calculator automatically computes your grade from the quarter grades only. Set both quarters to 50% weight for an even average.

How does the semester grade affect my GPA?

Your semester grade determines the letter grade recorded on your transcript. That letter grade then maps to GPA points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.) which factor into your cumulative GPA. Use our GPA Calculator to see the impact on your overall GPA.
