Every May, over 2.8 million high school students sit for College Board AP exams. Unlike high school letter grades, AP exams are graded on a standardized 5-point scale. A score of 3, 4, or 5 can earn you up to 8 university semester credit hours, saving thousands in college tuition.
College Credit by AP Score
- Score 5 (Extremely Well Qualified): Accepted for credit by 99% of colleges; often fulfills major prerequisite courses.
- Score 4 (Well Qualified): Accepted for credit by over 90% of colleges.
- Score 3 (Qualified): Accepted by most state universities and regional colleges; fulfills general education credits.
- Scores 1 & 2: No college credit awarded.
The AP Exam Scoring Curve
AP curves are remarkably forgiving compared to normal classroom grading. On exams like AP Calculus or AP Physics, scoring between 65% and 72% composite often lands you a top score of 5! The College Board establishes these cutoffs using psychometric norming against real college students taking the same final exams.
AP Score Calculator FAQ
The College Board considers a score of 3, 4, or 5 to be passing ('qualified' for college credit). Most state universities award college credits or advanced placement for scores of 3 or higher, while highly selective private colleges often require a 4 or 5.
An AP composite score combines Section I (Multiple Choice) points and Section II (Free Response Questions / FRQs) points. Each section is multiplied by a weighting factor so that the total exam equals 100 or 108 composite points. Standard composite score cutoff brackets determine whether you earn a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
Colleges only see your final scaled score from 1 to 5. They never see your raw points, multiple-choice accuracy, or individual FRQ rubric points.
