How to Calculate Your Midterm Exam Grade

Midterm examinations mark the halfway milestone of a semester or quarter. Understanding the mathematical leverage of your midterm allows you to allocate your study hours effectively, determine whether an A is realistic, or see how much cushion you have to maintain your current GPA.

The Midterm Exam Weight Formula

To calculate what you need on the midterm, use this simple algebraic rearrangement:

Midterm Score = [Target - (Current × (1 - Weight))] / Weight

If your target grade is 90%, your pre-midterm grade is 85%, and the midterm is worth 20%, you need: [90 - (85 × 0.80)] ÷ 0.20 = [90 - 68] ÷ 0.20 = 110% (meaning you would need extra credit to reach an A on the midterm alone).

What If You Score Lower Than Expected?

A common misconception is that a below-average midterm automatically ruins a semester. In reality, a 20% midterm means that 80% of your course grade comes from other components. If you score 70% on a 20% midterm while carrying an 88% average, your grade only decreases to 84.4% (solid B). You still have the final exam (typically 25-35%) and homework to rebuild your standing.

Midterm Grade Calculator FAQ

Use the formula: Required Midterm Score = [Target Overall Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Midterm Weight))] ÷ Midterm Weight. For example, if your current grade is 88%, your target is 90%, and the midterm is worth 25% (0.25), you need: [90 - (88 × 0.75)] ÷ 0.25 = [90 - 66] ÷ 0.25 = 96%.

A 20% midterm accounts for one-fifth of your total grade. If you score 10% lower on the midterm than your current standing (e.g. 75% vs 85%), your overall course grade will drop by exactly 2.0% (10% × 0.20).

While a low midterm score impacts your grade, midterms rarely exceed 20% to 30% of a course grade. You still have the remaining assignments, projects, quizzes, and the final exam (which is typically worth another 25-35%) to recover your GPA.
