10-Point Scale vs 7-Point Scale
Most high schools and colleges use the standard 10-point scale where 90% or above yields an A. However, certain competitive prep schools and southeastern school districts utilize a 7-point scale where an A requires 93% or higher, and anything under 70% is considered failing (an F). Always check your teacher's syllabus before assuming which scale applies.
How Rounding Affects Letter Grades
In standard mathematical rounding, numbers ending in .5 or above round up to the next integer (e.g. 89.5% becomes 90.0% = A-). Many grading systems such as Canvas, Blackboard, or Google Classroom automatically round final percentages. If your syllabus does not mention rounding, polite communication during office hours can clarify how your instructor handles borderline percentages.
Frequently Asked Questions
On standard US plus/minus grading scales, an 85% is a solid B (3.0 GPA). On a standard 10-point scale without plus/minus grades, 80-89% is also a B. On a strict 7-point scale, an 85% corresponds to a B or B- depending on the institution.
Most high schools and universities that round grades to the nearest integer will round an 89.5% up to a 90.0%, making it an A-. However, grading policies vary by professor and school district; some syllabi state strictly that 89.99% remains a B+ unless explicit rounding is specified.
A standard 10-point scale assigns letter grades in 10% increments (90-100% is an A, 80-89% is a B, 70-79% is a C, 60-69% is a D, below 60% is an F). A 7-point scale is more demanding: 93-100% is an A, 85-92% is a B, 77-84% is a C, 70-76% is a D, and anything below 70% is failing.
Standard US 4.0 GPA conversion assigns numerical values: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, and F = 0.0.
