1. The 4-Step GPA Formula

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standardized numerical summary of your academic performance. While grading scales vary slightly between high schools and universities, every institution calculates GPA using the same four fundamental steps:

  1. Step 1: Convert Letter Grades to Grade Points. Convert every letter grade you received into numerical points using your school's scale (e.g. A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0).
  2. Step 2: Calculate Quality Points. Multiply the grade point value of each course by the number of credit hours (or units) that class is worth.
Formula: Quality Points = Grade Points ร— Credit Hours.
  3. Step 3: Sum Quality Points and Credits. Add together all of your earned Quality Points, and add together all of your completed Credit Hours.
  4. Step 4: Divide Total Quality Points by Total Credits.
Formula: GPA = Total Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours.

2. Standard 4.0 Grade Point Scale

Most American high schools and colleges follow the standard plus/minus 4.0 scale:

Letter Grade Percentage Range Regular (Unweighted) Honors (+0.5) AP / IB (+1.0)
A+97% โ€“ 100%4.004.505.00
A93% โ€“ 96%4.004.505.00
A-90% โ€“ 92%3.704.204.70
B+87% โ€“ 89%3.303.804.30
B83% โ€“ 86%3.003.504.00
B-80% โ€“ 82%2.703.203.70
C+77% โ€“ 79%2.302.803.30
C73% โ€“ 76%2.002.503.00
D60% โ€“ 69%1.001.502.00
FBelow 60%0.000.000.00

3. College GPA Example (Credit Hours)

In college, classes carry different credit hours (e.g. a 4-credit Organic Chemistry lab carries twice the GPA influence of a 2-credit Physical Education class). Here is a worked example:

  • Chemistry (4 credits) with grade A (4.0) = 4 ร— 4.0 = 16.0 Quality Points
  • Calculus (4 credits) with grade B+ (3.3) = 4 ร— 3.3 = 13.2 Quality Points
  • English Composition (3 credits) with grade A- (3.7) = 3 ร— 3.7 = 11.1 Quality Points
  • Psychology (3 credits) with grade B (3.0) = 3 ร— 3.0 = 9.0 Quality Points
Total Credits: 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 14 credits
Total Quality Points: 16.0 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 9.0 = 49.3 points
Semester GPA: 49.3 รท 14 = 3.52 GPA

4. Cumulative GPA: Combining Semesters

A frequent student mistake is simply averaging semester GPAs together (e.g. averaging a 3.0 semester and a 4.0 semester to get 3.5). This only works if both semesters had the exact same number of credits!

The correct way to calculate Cumulative GPA is:

Cumulative GPA = (Prior Quality Points + Current Quality Points) รท Total Combined Credits

Frequently Asked Questions

The fundamental formula is: GPA = Total Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours. Quality Points for each class equal Grade Points (A=4, B=3, etc.) multiplied by that class's Credit Hours.

For a weighted GPA, add bonus points before multiplying by credits: add +1.0 for AP and IB courses (so an A is 5.0) and +0.5 for Honors courses (so an A is 4.5). Regular courses remain on the standard 4.0 scale.

No. Passing (P) grades grant credit hours toward graduation but are excluded from the GPA calculation entirely. However, at some universities, a failing (F) grade in a Pass/Fail course receives 0.0 grade points and harms your GPA.
