Understanding How One Assignment Affects Your Course Grade
Every semester, students ask: "If I skip this homework, will my A turn into a B?" or "How many points do I need on this project to keep my scholarship GPA?" The math behind assignment impact depends entirely on course weighting vs total points grading systems.
Weighted Categories System
If assignments are grouped into categories (e.g. Quizzes = 20%, Homework = 20%, Midterm = 25%, Final = 35%), the impact of one assignment is its share within that category. For example, if there are 5 quizzes worth 20% total, each quiz is worth 4% of your entire course grade. A 0% on one quiz will drop your final grade by 4.0% maximum.
Total Points System
In a total points course, all assignments simply add up (e.g. 1,000 total points in the semester). An assignment worth 50 points is worth exactly (50 ÷ 1,000) = 5% of your final semester grade, regardless of whether it was called a quiz, essay, or homework.
Assignment Grade Calculator FAQ
Divide the points you earned by the total points possible, then multiply by 100. For instance, if you scored 43 points on a 50-point assignment: (43 ÷ 50) × 100 = 86% (B).
The drop equals the assignment's weight percentage multiplied by your current standing. For example, if you have a 90% average and receive a 0% on an assignment worth 10% of your course, your overall class grade drops by exactly 9.0 percentage points to 81%.
Check your course syllabus for category weights or total course points. In a weighted system, if Homework is worth 20% and there are 10 homework assignments of equal value, each individual assignment is worth 2% of your overall course grade.
