How Cumulative GPA Is Calculated

Your cumulative GPA represents your overall academic performance across all semesters. Here's the formula and how it works.

🧮

The Cumulative GPA Formula

Cum. GPA = (Prior GPA × Prior Credits + Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Example: Prior 3.2 GPA over 60 credits + current 3.8 GPA over 15 credits = (192 + 57) ÷ 75 = 3.32 cumulative GPA.

📊

Why Cumulative GPA Changes Slowly

The more credits you've earned, the harder it is to move your cumulative GPA. A freshman with 15 credits can swing their GPA dramatically in one semester. A senior with 90+ credits needs sustained improvement over multiple terms.

🔄

Grade Replacement

Many schools allow you to retake a course and replace the old grade. The original grade typically remains on your transcript but doesn't count toward cumulative GPA. Check your institution's specific grade replacement policy.

🎯

Setting Realistic GPA Goals

Use the GPA Goal Planner tab to calculate what semester GPA you need. If the required GPA exceeds 4.0, you'll need multiple semesters of strong performance to reach your target. Start planning early!

Cumulative GPA: Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply your prior cumulative GPA by prior credits to get prior quality points. Add your current semester quality points (semester GPA × credits). Divide total quality points by total credits. For example: prior 3.2 × 60 credits = 192 QP + current 3.8 × 15 credits = 57 QP. Total: 249 ÷ 75 = 3.32 cumulative GPA.
Use the formula: Needed GPA = (Target × Total Future Credits − Current GPA × Current Credits) ÷ New Credits. Our GPA Goal Planner does this automatically. The higher your credit count, the harder it is to move your cumulative GPA in a single semester.
Because you have more credits weighing down the average. A freshman with 15 credits can dramatically change their GPA with one great semester. A senior with 90+ credits needs many consecutive strong semesters. Each new semester's credits represent a smaller fraction of the total.
If your school has a grade replacement policy, yes — the new grade replaces the old one in GPA calculations. If your school averages both attempts, the improvement is smaller. Not all schools allow grade replacement, so check your registrar's policy first.
